A Russian satellite news channel, Russia Today, has linked Activision's Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 with the recent terrorist attack that took place earlier this week.A suicide bomber detonated a 7kg bomb at Discommode airport in Russia, killing 35 people and leaving ten injured. The Northern Caucasus are believed to be behind the attack.
Modern Warfare 2 had the controversial level 'No Russian', seeing players take the role of an undercover officer and participate in a terrorist attack at a Russian airport. Players are left with the choice of gunning down civilians as the stage plays out.
The New York Times has highlighted that Russia Today had
placed emphasis on the game being American made. In addition, an interviewee on American network station Fox News, Walid Phares, added: “I think those who have been radicalized already — let’s suppose in this case jihadists, Al Qaeda or some other kind — they look at the games and say these games will serve them to train."
Activision had omitted the stage from the Russian retail version of the game. Territories such as Japan saw players fail their mission if even one civilian was gunned down.
What do you make of this outlet of the Russian media making such a link between a real life atrocity and a popular FPS? Any thoughts, feel free to post them in the Comments section below.
