PSP2 Rumours Fail to Agree on Design Specifics

Some sources say slider, others say candybar.

Confusion sets in at the PSP2 rumour mill, as IGN claims that "current iterations" of the fabled handheld "maintains the slider design of the PSPgo."

This is coming from a source that has apparently had an extensive hands-on experience with the device. The problem comes when vg247, the source of allegedly leaked images of the PSP2, stated almost as soon as it published its article that Sony has since changed the design of the new portable, to "a form like PSP-1000 in order to cool it down."

So either someone's telling porkies or they're running on outdated information. For what it's worth, the IGN report features dual analogue nubs with concave indentations, has a glass-like surface on the back to input touch commands ("such as analog thumbstick-type controls, taps [and] swipes...") and both rear- and front-facing cameras for photos and augmented reality games.

We're not sure - should the information be accurate at the time of the hands-on - if all of these features would remain if Sony did decide to change the PSP2's design. What's likely to stay the same is the technology under the hood - and IGN's source claims the new handheld has the power to rival early PS3 titles.

Sort of.

Apparently the processor is "just over half as powerful as the PS3... [allowing] it to sufficiently play games of comparable graphical quality due to the fact that it is rendering to a smaller, lower-resolution display." Bit of a long shot, but we'll run with it.

Some speculation to round off the piece includes the as-yet unproven possibility that Sony could allow players to hot-swap their PS3 games over to their PSP2 so they can continue playing on the move, before swapping back to the PS3 once they return home. That would certainly be a nice idea.

Well, given that the systems have completely different processors and therefore run different executable code, the only way this could work would be by having 2 copies of the game, one built for each system and a cloud based setup to store your saved games.

This may happen for 1 or 2 titles, but don't expect it to work with all, and certainly not with any existing games.

^ bit inside the box there, are we not? if they say its "just over half the power of the ps3" then it way well be packing a mini 6 core cell CPU (with one core for the OS and the other disabled for better manufacturing = 4 cores) clocked at 2GHz at a fabrication of 22nm then this sounds more than possible, before you rant about is being "impassable" its not as a 32 core Cell exists at 35nm. This then explains the "overheating problems" thet were reported.

This = the ability to play ported games from the PS3. currently a GPU the size of an ARM exists that is based on the Nvidea ION 2 but has more pipelines etc., If anything this is way more than possible.

Kezy - If that was to me, sorry to disappoint. This is not a mini Cell processor and it's not 6 core and it's not 2GHz.

There's also a difference between ported games and "hot-swapping PS3 games onto the PSP2" The latter suggests it running PS3 code and given that it's got an entirely different processor, it'd have to emulate the PS3 to run it's code. And that'd be just a little bit slow.

Also, if it was any sort of Cell processor, the battery would have to be the size of a car battery to run the thing more than 2 hours. The PSP2 has a processor from the same family of processors that all modern portable devices have.

@I_Have_A_Sliding_One
the cell was created 4-6years ago, i think technology is way more advance today than 6years ago. creating a 6 spu cell with low power consumption is not impossible, it's very plausible. the ps3 cell is actually one core but have 8 spu. cellphone already going to two core, so putting one core cell in a psp2 is not something crazy.

I'm not saying it can't have one, I'm saying it doesn't have one. End of story.
