Kinect has yet to launch in Japan - it will be doing so tomorrow morning - but already some high-profile game designers are talking about future projects that look set to add some depth to the motion-sensing experience.Famitsu asked the opinions of Suda51 of
No More Heroes fame,
Panzer Dragoon director Yukio Futatsugi and
Parappa the Rapper creator Masaya Matsuura on the Xbox 360 peripheral, and all have revealed new titles to be published by Microsoft in 2011.
Suda51's Grasshopper Manufacture is working on "Codename D," an action game set in a creepy amusement park. You have to fight off enemies and experience strange, nasty creatures to clear missions. It's in aid of "restoring your lost self," apparently. Suda51 added that with Kinect, "freedom of hands has the meaning of greater freedom and openness."
With his apparent love for dragons, you'd be forgiven for thinking Futatsugi would be working on a 3D flight shooting game featuring the mythical creatures. He is. Project Draco lets Kinect players interact and raise their own dragons and teach it skills to be used in mid-air combat. We assume it's a bit like How To Train Your Dragon, only awesome.
Because of the action, involved, Futatsugi is keeping a close eye on comfortability issues with the device - specifically things like the length of maps and the frequency of enemy attacks. It was stressed that this is not a party game, but a full core experience.
Finally, the legendary Matsuura is busy with a game for Kinect called
Haunt, which involves exploring a cursed mansion, while avoiding traps and ghosts. The developer said that the game "can be played by a wide range of people. In addition to the enjoyment of the game play, you can also look forward to the quality of the visuals and music."
Let's hope Kinect enjoys some more games of this calibre, rather than the multitude of fitness games that already decorate store shelves.
