Ever looked at the Xbox 360's Indie Games Marketplace and felt dirty afterwards? Don't worry, it's something we've all experienced. Now, a group of indie developers are taking a stand to fight "against mediocrity and lameness."14 studios have banded together to create the Indie Games Winter Uprising, which aims to cross-promote a selection of games that are considered to be the cream of the digital crop. Established by Robert Boyd of Zeboyd Games,
a website has launched with the phrase, "If you thought that the XBox Live Indie Games service was just filled with massage apps, clones, and garbage, think again."
Games such as
Cthulhu Saves the World,
Soulcaster 2 and
Asteroids Do Concern Me will be launched on the Microsoft platform during the first week of December, surely giving the service the biggest kick up the quality department it has ever seen. Ska Studios, the creators of the highly successful
Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, is also launching a new title as part of the festival.
MagicalBeanTime's Ian Stocker recalled the idea, "I asked Robert Boyd if he wanted to release
Cthulhu at the same time that I released
Soulcaster II, so we could do some cross promotion. Even though the games are different genres, they target the same demographic so if we can get someone to visit the channel for one, maybe she'll buy the other as well?
"Robert was into the idea and thought we should take it to the next level. If we coordinate two releases, why not coordinate 12? More traffic = more sales = more revenue for Microsoft = increased likelihood of promoting Indie Games on the dashboard. That's the theory at least."
Can't see Microsoft complaining about it, to be honest. Roll on December.
