Kinect Goes on UK Tour
Microsoft is taking Kinect out on the road in the UK and Eire so you can try before you buy. Well, we say "the UK" but right now it's only England confirmed.

Dates and locations confirmed so far are:
Alton Towers – 1st August – 30th September
London Zoo – 7th – 22nd August
The Thames Festival in London – 11th – 12th September
Chessington World of Adventures – 21st – 31st October
Clothes Show Live in Birmingham (NEC) – 2nd – 8th December

There are also places known as "Kinect Galleries", these are "open to the public on Saturday 31st July 2010, and will be open daily between 10am and 8pm at 4-6 Russell Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 7BN."

Yes, right now that looks like one gallery... we'll report when we hear more.

This list clearly sets out who MS are aiming this at, just wish they hadn't flirted about suggesting it was also for the 'core gamers'.

Or, maybe they think the 'core gamers' will buy it or know about it anyway and we don't need a show.

Do you know if you have to be inside the venue, or will it be at the entrance? By that I mean, say I want to try it out at Alton Towers, does that mean I have to pay to enter the park or can I just go along for Kinect?

Nice to see they remembered the North. As usual all the demo stations are down South. What a let down. You think they would want blanket coverage in places where people could get hold of it, not these select places. Just asking it to fail by doing that.

That would mean getting PR and marketing people to leave the South. Come on, be serious now, you can't expect that of them...

Not convinced they believe we have electricity up here.

I do remember one time a games company thought to have a press event in the North, though. It was well exciting that I only had to take me 'orse and cart down to Sheffield.

Interesting that Sony has been "Sign this and we'll let you have a Move to play with Mr Pressman" while Microsoft has been, "Hahahahah, seriously?"

A nicely controlled environment for Kinect with Kinectimals and bowling with the family compared to a bunch of hacks saying, "Well, we tried to play Burnout Paradise, and the f**ker bit us!"

Or am I being cynical?

Yeah, the cynical educated person on these matters would probably tear it to pieces, whereas people that don't really game would think it was rather spiffing. I think that's the true reason behind these carefully picked placements of Kinect. In the USA they had demo stations in Macy's, which is the equivalent of putting it in Harvey Nichols over here. You could look upon it as Microsoft know the savvy customer will see straight through it and are keeping it away from them by placing it in such obscure places to lure the easily impressed casual market.

Macy's the equivalent of Harvey Nicks!?!? Have you ever been in Harvey Nicks. There's a handful of them in the country, and all they sell is overpriced clothes and toiletries for people more obsessed with how they look than what they can subsequently afford to do. Macy's are in every two-bit back of beyond mall in the states and sell Levi's at $30 a pair. Kinect in Macy's is the equivalent of it being in BHS over here.
