Kojima Reveals Monster Hunter x Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker

And other assorted, magical tie-ups.

'Collaboration' was the word that resonated the most in a Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker presentation held today. Hideo Kojima took to the stage to present the game, and detail the mad number of tie-ups that will see Snake eating Doritos, drinking Mountain Dew and dabbling with Monster Hunter.

Of the pickups that will appear in the high-profile PSP title, there will be Mexican Taco flavoured Doritos, Pepsi Nex, Axe Body Spray (or Lynx to us British folk), Weekly Shounen Magazine, and Mountain Dew. Classic 1970s Sony Walkmans will be displayed as music playback tools in the game.

Beyond the PSP, Square Enix announced it was producing branded figures, while accessory maker Hori will be creating MGS-themed peripherals. Sony will be selling a limited edition real Walkman in celebration of its use in Peace Walker, and even clothes outfit Uniqlo is to be getting in on the action.

Yamaha is another company working with Kojima Productions to lend its licensed Vocaloid synthetic sound system to the soundtrack. Sound director Kazuki Muraoka revealed that female singer Yumi Kikuchi performed for the boss battle music, which was distorted via Vocaloid to provide a "fear of mismatch" and "a strangeness."

Players will be invited to create their own lyrics, which will be sent to a server via the PSP game and sung back to them using Yamaha's Net Vocaloid system. Muraoka said that contests will be held for original lyrics, and DLC will be offered for user-generated content.

As for the game tie-ups, remember the Assassin's Creed II x Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker video? Turns out it wasn't an April Fools joke - that's actually going to happen. No other details were mentioned of that, but what was shown was a video featuring Snake tackling beasts from Monster Hunter.

Now for the game. Kojima expressed that one of the keywords to Peace Walker is "senyuu" - basically, "sneaking with friends." Co-op play forms a heavy part of the game, to the degree that players share life, items and other things between friends during this mode.

Read the rest of the conference roundup on Andriasang - but we think you'll agree that this was one string of announcements that nobody expected. We're still in shock really. Doritos?
