Microsoft Natal: Not for Bedsits

Bad news for students

Microsoft Natal: Not for Bedsits
Apparently you're going to need more space than the average student bedsit or a granny flat within which to get the most out of Microsoft's body-centric motion controller, Project Natal.

According to a report on Techflash, "To be precise, you'll want to clear an area extending at least 4 meters (a little more than 13 feet) away from the television. That's the back edge of the space to be taken into account by the Natal sensors. In terms of width and height, the field of vision naturally expands as it moves from the Natal device to that back edge, ending up a little more than 4 meters wide and 2.7 meters high (about 8 feet, 10 inches)."

We attempted to gauge reactions from some students to this news, but none of them were awake.

It's a shame no of the students were awake, was your proofreader?

Seriously though, this could hurt mainstream adoption of the device, or it could force Xboxes to be moved out of bedrooms and into sitting rooms, where they can be accepted by the expanded audience. It could be interesting either way.

This is a serious problem, very few people will have this kind of space, and as it`s appeal is for more casual gamers (to begin with) its very unlikely MS will not come back and smack this down with a "Natal will work in a variety of situations and rooms" but if its true they have killed it before it began!

Consoles should adapt to us, and not the other way around. This space requirement is something I can't put up with. My TV is directly in front of my bed, and my room isn't big enough for me to create any more space. Besides, I HATE motion controls! Natal is just another example of Microsoft being a company that only goes where the money is. Motion control is the worst thing to happen to this industry, but it's not like Microsoft cares because they are the type of company that would do anything to get inside the wallets of the casual crowd. Then again, Sony and Nintendo are almost just as bad. *Sigh* Why can't we have a game company that only cares about our mentality, and not our wallets?
