The upcoming Xbox 360 update won't all be chocolates and roses for those gamers using unauthorised third party storage devices, as they'll cease to work with the console starting with the Preview Program this week.

Microsoft mouthpiece Major Nelson announced the news on his blog, giving a heads up to anyone using an “unauthorised Memory Unit” - but we'd hazard a guess that unofficial hard drives may not work either, if the intention is to beef up security on the Xbox 360.

“If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.” said Major Nelson. Apparently, 'authorised' storage devices extend as far as Microsoft's own products, if the official website is anything to go by.

The next Xbox 360 update includes integration of social networking services Facebook, Last.fm and Twitter.

"Buy our stuff or we'll screw your data" - didn't MS get found guilty of anti-competetive practices in the past? Shouldn't soem consumer organisation take action against this?

Depends what they mean by unauthorised save devices. When I have a 20gb hard drive all my game saves go onto it. MS have to be more specific about what they mean, since also frequently connect my iPod to listen to podcasts.

If they mean thrid party memory cards, even that is weird.

Last FM I'll welcome, but Facebook and Twitter I feel are becoming too intergrated into everything like some big brother nightmare, so they won't be invading my gaming.
