Confirmed: PS3 Sales Up More than 1,000%

11-fold increase

SPOnG has just spoken with UK games statistics collator, Chart-Track, which has confirmed that sales of the PlayStation 3 increased by more than one thousand per cent on the previous week. This (audited) week, of course, saw the launch of PS3 Slim.

The Chart-Track spokesman told us, "Actually, it was more than 999%. Our system shows up to three digits so essentially 999 is what our system does in this situation."

He continued, "There has actually been more than an 11-fold increase in sales over the previous week. The PS3 also outsold the other three top-selling consoles (Xbox 360, Wii and DS Lite) by 3-1. That's not all together by 3-1 but respectively - each of those sold roughly the same number."

This is undoubtedly great news for Sony and fans of the PlayStation 3. However, it should be borne in mind that Chart-Track would not supply actual numbers of units sold for the period. Without these, any percentage increase or decrease coming from an unknown base must always been viewed slightly askance. For example, in the week prior to the launch of the PS3 Slim in Japan we were aware that the PS3 sales had been crippled to just over a thousand units.

Given that note of caution, however, an increase of more than 1,000% for the PS3 indicates healthy competition in the console hardware scene.

This will be a temporary short term blip, while the people who have waited for the price cut and slim PS3 buy it on initial release. Trust me, the hardware sales will decline, just like a few of the PS3 games go high in the charts on initial release, and Wii games then overtake them in the long run.

I agree, its a nice Sony victory, but it will be short lived. 360 Elite sales are also up, and both consoles will sound tempting in he coming months.

I will buy a PS3. I'm kinda waiting for Spong to do a competition to win one, though (hint hint).
