Microsoft Defends Xbox 360 Against Unscientific Survey
Microsoft has apparently felt the need to respond to a controversial Game Informer survey that declared a 54.2% failure rate based on reports from 5,000 GI readers.

The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that, while avoiding any mention of specific figures, Microsoft unsurprisingly stands by its gaming console having issues a release stating:

"Microsoft stands behind the Xbox 360 as a superior entertainment console with one of the best warranties in the industry. We are constantly improving the design, manufacture and performance of the console through extensive testing of potential sources of any problems. Xbox 360 is pleased to maintain the title of "most played console" and the vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day, and continue to, day in and day out. Any Xbox 360 owners experiencing issues with their console should contact Microsoft for repairs or troubleshooting tips at www.xbox.com/support or 1-800-4-MY-XBOX."

The 'most played' tag comes from a Nielsen report which actually stated, "Xbox 360 and PS2 are now neck and neck in terms of minutes played per month, yet June data shows Xbox 360 is the most active console, with the 6-month trend show Xbox 360 with the highest active users."

I read that survey, it was crap. Of the ppl who read the site and bothered to fill in the survey then 54.2% had Xboxes that broke. You are more likely to enter a survey if you have something to report. The figures for Ps3 and Wii were way too high also.

The whole RRoD is really BS. I've had my Xbox since March 2008 and not once has anything ever happened. I have had people I know have the RRoD, but honestly it only happens when they play for ungodly amounts of time. Which if you do that on other consoles, like the PS2, even the Sega Genesis, your system freezes, messes up, overheats..and generally screws up.

Don't want your console to break? Don't play for 8 hours and complain about it suffering.

That said, before anyone responds "Well I've had mine break in 30 minutes!" It is a known fact that anywhere around 3% (+ or -) of electronics can be defective and marked as having passed all of their quality tests. So sorry you are one of the unfortunate ones...But don't go around spreading exaggerated misleading info for people to consume and multiply. I guarantee you of those 54% who were polled in GI many of them were probably Sony or Nintendo fanboys who have never owned the system, using their voice to spread lies about a company they hate for absolutely no reason other than their unfounded loyalty to a video game mascots because they have nothing else meaningful in their life to look to, or anything real to contribute to life.

Burn.

Although I am just a passer by who visits spong.com infrequently, I look forward to hearing insults similar to "Your a fanboy", "You wrote all that", "Your a nerd", "Liar", "Your comment didn't contribute anything to life", etc. What I would be surprised to see is a true argument, good luck.

3% defect rate?

Really? 3 in every 100 products are busted right outta the factory?

Doubt it buddy.

For the reported 10m PS3s in EU that would be 300,000 faulty returns. No manufacturer could stand the cost of replacement and refurbishment

Most electronics go through a 'soak' period where they sit powered up in a controlled environment in order to shake out any bug before they leave the factory. You'd want <1% failure rate for sure

Anyways this is all moot because one warranty provider already spilled the beans and said that for Xbox 360 the failure rate is over 16% here -> http://news.spong.com/article/14803/Xbox-360-Warranty-Provider-Failure-Rate-Over-16-Percent

and as for your claim that 8h+ over use results in crash/freeze/whatever - I've never had my ps3, ps2 or ps1 do that. Nor my PC for that matter, and its running windows ffs.
