Xbox 360 to Pull Ahead of PS3 at Xmas

PS3 Slim and price cuts not affecting Activision's outlook

Posted by Staff
A slide accompanying Activision Blizzard's second quarter earnings announcements quotes hardware figures using data from Gfk, NPD and Charttrack.

Quite simply, this is what Activision Blizzard expects to see in terms of global console ownership at December 31st this year are as follows; the install base as of 30th June 09 are in round brackets; the estimated increase for calendar year 2009 according to Activision Blizzard's slide (see screen shot) is in square brackets:

Xbox 360: 33 million [9m] (27million).
PS3: 20 million [7m] (16 million).
Wii: 50 million-plus [15m] (40 million).

So, according to ActiBlizz the Microsoft console (adding nine million units) will outpace Sony foe (adding seven million units) by two million units in terms of growth.

Of course, CEO Bobby Kotick has already stated that he's thinking about dropping support for PS3 - and these figures have come before the announcements of a price cut for the PS3 'Phat' and the introduction of the PS3 Slim. Both the events are guaranteed* to happen according to several thousand reliable yet anonymous single sources from all corners of the Internet.

maths fail??

33 - 27 = 6 (not 9)
20 - 16 = 4 (not 7)

The figures do seem redundant given that Sony have just announced that they have sold 23m PS3s now..

sony never announce how many units they have sold only how many have shipped out of their factories. The consoles that will be sold over christmas they will be constructing and starting to ship now. Never trust sony's in house figures.

See, I looked at the report and the 27/16 figurs are for June 2009 and the 9/7 are estimates for the whole of 2009 and the 33/20 figurs are estimates for december 2009.

So no math fail, just not clear figurs.

Activisions a bunch of sony hating 360 cock sucking ass holes. Sonys got the christmas line up covered way better then 360 all the 360 has it halo ODSt and thats it. PS3 has at least 4 AAA games coming out in the 4th quarter to Micrsoft 1 maybe 2.

I'm going to have to stop you there I'm afraid, because you're wrong. Sony's about the only company that does detail -actual- sold consoles rather than merely shipped units.

If kotick keeps this on, expect the ps3 loyal fans to stop supporting activision. I already did.
