Midway games have announced that it will be closing its arcade division with the loss of 60 jobs. This is the latest bad news from the arcade scene and follows on from SNK, Konami, Sega and Capcom, all of whom have either scaled down production or halted it completely.
In an official statement issued over the weekend, Midway said it had reached the decision “in light of ongoing, declining demand in the coin-operated arcade videogame market.”
This is the end of arcade gaming in its present form but will not be the end of public gaming. Sega, Namco, Konami and even Square have all stated that they are working on high bandwidth arcade gaming projects. Capcom has even opened up an office in Korea, the heartland of Asian online gaming, dedicated to this kind of development.
