US movie studio, Paramount, is set to break into console games publishing with a title based on the upcoming
Star Trek film.
The game will only be available as a download, launching on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. This reinforces the fact that, for the moment at least, Paramount won't be publishing any games at retail.
Other properties that Paramount plans to release games based on
Top Gun,
The Warriors and
Days Of Thunder this year.
If you're wondering whether the choice to follow a download-only route reflects the mighty Paramount knowing something we don't about the impending death of retail - fear not. “We don’t have a strict percentage [of licensed properties], but we know our limits. Building an XBLA or PSN game is much less complicated than a triple-A retail title”, Paramount’s senior VP of video games John Kavanagh told MCV.
“Where we think it appropriate, we would consider doing a big movie franchise online ourselves, but we’re still very keen to keep working with our publishing partners”, he went on.
The move mirrors the decision by Warner Brothers to publish its
Watchmen game as a download only title - a move it said it would
repeat if Watchmen proved successful.
Whatever motivates Paramount's flirtation with download-only games, it's not good news for retail that media giants are getting comfortable in the download-only space - especially with such big-name properties.
The
Star Trek game is due out next month and will cost around £10.
