New information has arisen to add weight behind rumours of impending job cuts at Microsoft - this time from the respected Wall Street Journal.
The online arm of the WSJ reports that, according to sources familiar with Microsoft's plans, the software and games company is looking at laying off staff across its various divisions. The cuts could be announced as early as next week. This could well, of course, include the Entertainment and Devices Division that handles Xbox.
One WSJ source apparently said that the plans are not finalised and Microsoft could end up finding another way to cut costs, however.
Rumours of job cuts at Microsoft - traditionally a very stable company - have been circulating for weeks. One number floated put layoffs in the region of 15,000, a significant chunk of the 91,000-strong work force, but the Journal said that the number of redundancies will be far lower than that.
The fact that one of the most stable technology companies on the sector (sturdy enough to be able to stomach huge losses in gaming) is considering staffing cuts is not a good sign for the industry.
Elsewhere in the games industry there have been recent
job cuts at Electronic Arts, while two of the UK's biggest games retailers,
Zavvi and
Woolworths, have both gone into administration.
