Bill Houlehan, president of O'Shea Ltd., seems to think that the upcoming Atari movie, based on the life of Atari founder Nolan Bushnell and starring and produced by DiCaprio, is helping him shift some of his million-odd Atari games. He's even made an announcement to say so.
Houlehan's company, which buys up liquidated stock, acquired Atari's entire inventory back in the early '90s. It consisted of some 3 million titles for the Atari 2600 and 7800, including the likes of Pole Position, Ms. Pac Man, Battleground, Larry Bird v Dr. J and Donkey Kong.
The games have been lurking in 150ft below ground level in a Midwest limestone cave over in the Land of the Free. It sounds like some kind of lame super villain hideout (the Eight-Bit Edifice!), but really it's just one man's inability to bin stuff because 'it might be worth something one day.'
Anyway, the inventory started at three million games, but now only one million are advertised as for sale on O'Shea's website. So, maybe he's right and he's sold two million. Or maybe his wife got to them?
