The Nintendo presentation at E3 this year of our lords 2008 was a tag-team display or perky, quirky, bullish and almost mystical. The characters taking these respective roles were: Cammie Dunaway (executive vice president for sales and marketing, NOA); Shigeru Miyamoto (genius game designer and bad musician); Reggie Fils-Aime (president and CEO of NOA), Satoru Iwata (president of Nintendo).

For the most part it was a predictable and jolly affair... the most interesting of which - Wii Remote Plus having already been pre-announced. It will now come bundled with the Wii Sports update, Wii Sports Resort.

But of course before that there was Reggie and his figures. The Reginator spoke out loud the word 'fad' in terms of the DS and Wii ("some people called it a fad") before stating that he was here to tell us that, "...the word "fad" is no longer operable".

He then introduced a few numbers to cheer the hearts of his stockholders and Wii and DS owners. Let's start with the much berated Wii software library. According to Reg', in the first 19 months on sale, in comparison to PS3 and Xbox 360, well, Wii is kicking butt with 246 titles compared to Xbox 360's 126 and PS3's 135.

Next up are the hardware sales - hardly a surprise here but in the first 19 months on sale, the Wii leads shifted substantially greater numbers than... PS2. PS3, Xbox and Xbox 360 managed in their first 19 months on sale (see the Nintendo graph at the bottom of this story).

Both these sets of figures are global and we need to corroborate them. However, it's unlikely that, even after corroboration, the actual lead over competitors in the given period will be challenged.

Nintendo may not have exactly lit many fires in terms of games or hardware in its presentation. However, it's difficult not to see the killer look of achievement in the eyes of Iwata as he said, "Even Nintendo employees could not have imagined five years (ago) that... we would be selling millions of bathroom scales around the world".

That said, this was not a presentation for the hardcore. More analysis follows...
