PS3 Graphics Chip Going 65nm?

45nm process coming soon

PS3 Graphics Chip Going 65nm?
Reports suggest that the PlayStation 3 will be getting a smaller, 65nm RSX graphics processor from next month - a move that could result in lower production costs for Sony. Additionally, it looks like by 2009 the PS3 may feature an even smaller graphics chip using a 45nm process.

The report comes from Japanese newspaper, The Nikkei. It suggests that Toshiba will switch to a 65nm process for the chip - replacing the 90nm process that has been used since the console launched. Tosh recently reached an agreement with Sony that it would take over the Fab 2 facility, which manufactures the PS3's RSX graphics processor and had previously been jointly owned by the two companies.

The move will mean lower production costs thanks to a higher yield in the manufacturing process. This should, of course, in turn increase Sony's profit margin on the PS3 and potentially enable further price cuts down the line.

It has been speculated that a move to a 65nm process for the cell processor was what enabled Sony to drop the cost of the PS3 so dramatically when it introduced the 40GB model.

Doesnt matter if it goes 45nm the GPU is still old and off the shelf.

When have you ever written a fact?

Many times, fanboys look past them usually Sony fanboys to be more precise.

I can list many facts like for example:

Its a fact the 360 has more games

Its a fact the PS3 has the most hardware

Its a fact the Wii is the cheapest console

Its a fact the Wii and 360 have the biggest userbase

I could go on but it might start to go downhill.

Well said! See you can actually sprout facts, it's just a shame most of your posts are littered with blinkered diatribe.

Well said Rutabaga, I too am sick to bloody death of SuperSaitan4's continual trolling.
That was a typo but I have decided to leave it, as it is actually rather appropriate.
I beg SPOnG, once again, to include an "ignore" feature so nobody has to read that guff. I'm all for freedom of speech but once you've heard what an idiot has to say a thousand times and it's just the same old boring s**te, there comes a time when enough is enough.

The only idiot here is you and Sony fanbabies that believe that their PS3 is something from the heavens.

They all seem to miss the fact that Sony had to DEGRADE the machine to sell them, they also seem to miss the fact that many developers are going cross platform as the PS3 isnt all what its meant to be with higher costs to make games.

There is a reason why the 360 is more popular maybe you lot should sit back and think for a second.

Over 12million 360's sold, over 8million Xbox Live gamers.

Lol calm down people its only a forum just felt being a bit off cos its too easy just to type something.

Going back on topic and adding some positive info some CELL cpu's in the new PS3's are already 65nm so once both processors go down to 65nm then eventually 45nm might see a smaller PS3 perhaps and also more features at the same price if not less.

Sony has a good history on making things smaller and or lighter and usually with added features, its unfortunate on this occassion with the PS3 they had to take a step back but hopefully for them it means taking a big step forward.

anyways i like this idea because it can make use for a a price cut and even more energy efficant. However, u dont have to wait for this 65nm chip. the console is reliable and is very powerfull and will not burn like the xbox360. also thers no need to pray for the 65nm chip in ur ps3. anyways good job sony. if u keep doing good moves, ull be number 1 and just start destroying

Its doesnt matter what Sony does to lower the production costs, going Blu-ray was the biggest mistake Sony could have made for a console media. HD-DVD and just regular DVD are going to be the standard until the next gen comes along, and MAYBE Blu-Ray should be used. Sony is just trying to get itself out of a rut, cause with a high price tag and a crappy system, its just trying to get caught up with the 360 and Wii, which I doubt will happen even in the end. Face it Sony, you screwed yourself.
