This week's big releases

Something For The Weekend, Sir?
It's F-F-F-Friday! That means a good few things. It means that most of us can go to bed safe in the knowledge that we won't wake up to a gut-wrenching groan followed by work. It means drinking of beer is increasingly imminent. It means that EastEnders will be gracing our screens tonight. Most importantly, however, it means that today there be games.

Leading this week's releases (certainly if you're a shooter fan) is Epic's Unreal Tournament 3 on the PC. SPOnG's Adam Hartley's had a tinkle on it and it comes very highly recommended from what he's seen.

Guitar Hero III also sneaks out on the 360, PS3 Wii and PS2 ahead of EA's heavyweight contender, Rock Band. Will getting the jump on it be enough to fend off the competition? The question dangles like Jon Bon Jovi mid-wire move. Let's just hope that Activision can avoid being sued by Superbus for making Radio Song too close to the original...

BioWare's sci-fi RPG (well, one of its sci-fi RPGs), Mass Effect, makes its début today. If you've ever felt the lonely urge for a chat in the middle of an epic 360 gaming session, boy is this the game for you.

Eidos debuts its latest shooter franchise today with Kane & Lynch: Dead Men on the 360, PS3 and PC. You get to be bad. Real bad. Keep your eye on SPOnG for a review coming very soon.

Today, if you weren't aware, is a day that will go down in gaming history. It's the first time the general British public has been able to go out and lay their grubby mitts on a title that puts gaming's two most recognisable icons in the same game. Sonic and Mario are together on the Wii for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. SPOnG recommends that, for once, you follow the Wii's instructions on moving away any obstructions as you play. There's going to be arm waggling a-plenty.

Mario gets a second outing this week with Mario Party DS. You know the deal: a crapload of mini games strung together by a tenuous and unimportant storyline. The theme this time is shrinkage. You've been warned.

SPOnG stuck our heads round the local GameStation's door at lunchtime and, judging by the frenzy we saw, EA's Need for Speed ProStreet might be topping the Charts next week. It sees release on the 360, PS2 and PS3 this week.

Have good sofa time!
