It appears that Bill Gates'
January 2007 CES statement that BT (British Telecom to you oldsters) will partner with Microsoft for Xbox-based IPTV has been picked up and thrown around the web like a piece of rag-doll physics as if it was a whole new idea.
It's not.
Several reports are stating that IPTV for Xbox will be exclusive to BT and will launch sometime later this year. Just to refresh everyone's memories, here's what Microsoft said in June 2005:
"REDMOND, Wash., and LONDON — June 28, 2005 — Microsoft Corp. and BT today announced BT’s intention to use the Microsoft TV Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) Edition software platform to deliver TV over broadband in the United Kingdom. The announcement further strengthens Microsoft’s continued commitment to working with the world’s leading network operators to bring next-generation television services to consumers.
"BT plans to trial TV over broadband services powered by Microsoft TV IPTV Edition in early 2006, with delivery of a commercial service expected to begin in the summer of 2006.
And
here's what we reported from this year's CES:
"Gates, assisted by Microsoft's entertainment guru, Robbie Bach, introduced a new Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service for 360 – to launch later this year (in association with AT&T in the US, and BT in the UK) – and also announced that Live play between Vista and 360 will also be made available this year."
As yet, we're still waiting for a further announcement - we'll update you as soon as one occurs.
