Sony Confirms Movie and Video Downloads On PS3
Sony Computer Entertainment America's president and CEO, Jack Tretton, has confirmed that video and movie content is on the way to the PlayStation Network in the Western world.

In a corporate video (which can be seen below) put out to coincide with Sony's US announcement of the 80Gb PS3 and 60Gb version price cut, Tretton said, "We're excited to be launching a new download service that will give consumers the opportunity to take advantage of video, movie and other entertainment content available through the PlayStation Store."

Tretton also seems pretty chuffed with the broad range range of the PS3, saying "It's amazing how far it's come in very, very short order. For the first time you've got something that appeals to all consumers, young and old, male and female, whether they're hardcore gamers, casual gamers or not even interested in gaming at all."

The PS3's increased hard drive capacity (80Gb from 60Gb) will offer up more space for storing all the extra goodies to be had over the PlayStation Network (PSN). It also makes ridiculous amounts of sense when considering the fact that Sony has a huge movie studio and record label under its belt.

Microsoft has been offering Video on Demand (VOD) in the states since last November.

Sony has already been in talks with Korean broadcasters to arrange a video on demand (VOD) service, but until now the service was only confirmed for that region.

There will no doubt be more information to come over the course of E3, so keep your eyes on SPOnG for further developments.

Once again this seems like something that will beniefit Sony more than the customer.
