Edinburgh Interactive Festival to Step Up Its Game
Edinburgh, which already has a well established international reputation for the fringe, jazz, book and film festivals, is this year is set to get its ‘sixth major proper' show in the shape of the game-focused 'Edinburgh Interactive Festival', one of the promoters informed SPOnG earlier today.

The festival’s organisers informed SPOnG that the event is will place on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 August, will put an increased focus on the cultural impact and relevance of games.

“Previously the Edinburgh Interactive Festival was thought of by many as an industry event, but we want people to see that it’s open for all to come along and get involved in,” Ian Stirling, a promoter at the EIF’s newly-commissioned PR desk told SPOnG earlier today.

“There will be free screenings of new games and lots of events really showing off the creativity that there is in the industry,” Stirling continued, adding that,”the line between arts and gaming has blurred a lot…Tickets for these type of events are actually free and we plan to publicise the Interactive Festival in all the arts sections of the newspapers and festival listings magazines and so on to ensure that the events get noticed much more this year.”

“In Edinburgh we already have the five well-established festivals – the international, jazz, fringe, book and film festivals and we want this to be the sixth,” the PR man stressed.

SPOnG, of course, will be hobnobbing with the games industry’s key players in publishing, hardware and development alongside emerging games design, scriptwriting and artistic talent.

“This year we have much to be excited about,” commented EIF chairman Chris Deering (former Codemasters and Chairman and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe). “We welcome Ubisoft President and Founder Yves Guillemot; Simon Nelson joins us from the BBC; we have a keynote from Sony Computer Entertainment; a look at technology for Second Life with Linden Labs’ Jim Purbrick and actor Steven Berkoff (of Killzone 'fame') will join us to discuss how to capture performance within a game.”

“The festival is now firmly established as one of the most important events in the interactive entertainment industry’s calendar,” added Deering.
