Bill Gates On New Xbox Controls

Speaks out in “Bill and Steve Jobs Excellent Adventure”

Bill Gates On New Xbox Controls
Future game control methods for Xbox will be based around video recognition, as opposed to Wii-style ‘3D positional devices’ according to Microsoft boss-nerd, Bill Gates (pictured in his younger days right here).

Speaking out at the recent All Things Digital conference Bill opined, "Software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you're just going to pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it.”

But isn’t this already being done in Wii Sports tennis Bill?

"No, that’s not it. You can’t pick up your tennis racket… and swing it. You can’t sit there with your friends and do those natural things. That’s a 3D positional device," Gates added. "This is video recognition. This is a camera seeing what’s going on.”

No, like a camera attached to a console actually allowing it to understand actions more like how the human mind can. understanding spacial differences and 3d motion. Not just the standard up/down/left/right that most camera cames use today. While the wii remote is an awesome way of getting motion sensing at a fair cost with fairly simple development, bill is talking about further down the line being able just move around and have it understand. Wana hold a remote while doing so? fine. How bout an actual sword you have laying around? That would work to. Perchance playing Zelda pants-less? Well if your that well endowed, have at it!

It's a rip-off of the EyeToy, maybe not quite what it does now but it is what Sony have been working on for ages. Amazing how people forget how Microsoft have blatantly copied everyone else from the word go; e.g. controller design (including shape, layout and vibration), online console gaming (which was mooted by Dreamcast but was also a VERY early plan for PS2); now even the "Elite" version of 360 has copied the colour scheme of the PS3.

One day people will start to realise that Microsoft have not an original bone in their organisation... and while I'm at it, Halo is simply Quake for pansies.

a) Every "inovation" in gameing has coem form the PC space almost without exception. There has been silly ass "wave ur arms to hit random objects" games since the advent of the webcam... or quickcam, as that is the band-aid of webcams.

b) It is actually not at all what sony has been doing for "ages" (4 years?). Sony has been doing what casual pc game makers have been doing for ages. MS is trying to do something more advanced and worthwhile, it just uses the same input. I suppose halo totally rips off simcity cause both can be played with a controller? ffs.

They stole the general shape of the DC controller and improved its ergonomics. They where the first to do the staggered joysticks layout however which is generally proffered for any game that uses both heavily like FPS and was copied by the gamecube.

it actually dates back to the mid 80's with atari i believe but several attempts have been made over the years. Before the DC sega actually had the most success with it on the gen/mega with seganet. It even included downloading games.

I seriously hope that was meant as a joke or else thats the single most retarded thing I've ever read on an internet forum. A tall order to be sure.

"Logical evolution" != "theives!!1"
Sony stole the idea of a game console from Nintendo!!! I don't know why I let myself be suckered into this s**t. If you actually meant any of what you wrote you are seriously retarded. In which case I suppose i shouldn't make fun of you. "sorry for calling you retarded, retard".

My question:

"What does BIll Gates know about games?"

I'm guess the answer is "not much".

I can't believe you bothered to go through the Bentley post and try to make sense of it.

In the nicest way possible, you really ought to be asking if you can be that much smarter.

That was more for my entertainment than anything.

Stop the presses folks! I think this is the first time that me and Lupos can finally agree that Bently is a true idiot. Also to agree with that Microsoft didn't STEAL any of the aforementioned things. They were all logical evolutions.

Indeed, with the Xbox and Xbox360 Microsoft have been the manifestation of constant perfecting inside the traditional structure of the videogaming industry. It's also that reason why they will keep having a hard time making the Xbox-brand truly main-stream (that and the Halo-image). Always being a step behind the real innovators and/or trendsetters, and with the gameindustry's cyclical behavior that step behind means at least 4-5 years. In a high-tech industry as this one that could be fatal.

For traditional hard-core and casual gamers they're a very good thing too happen though. In my opinion, Halo is the worse thing to happen for FPS-gaming, showing everyone how you can water down and noobinize FPS-games. I want my FPS with a dozen explosions going off per frame (running at 60fps constantly!) not a dozen explosions barely every 5 minutes, barely running at 30 fps.

Just...the GC-controller is a perfected PS2-controller in terms of design and ergonomics, except for the 2 missing buttons and the c-nub.

If you got the money to spend on PC upgrades every six months, more power to you, but I highly doubt you have any current FPSes running at 60 fps with all the settings maxxed out.

Also, as much as I loathe the X-Box 1 controller (not the S which isn't as bad), the GC controller was not suited for FPSes and the PS2 controller was just better all around in my opinion.

Well, I don't know about you lot, but I recall the aborted camera that Nintendo were developing for the Gamecube. That, purportedly, had a dual visual/infra-red system and the infra-red camera allowed it to detect depth information; sound anything like what Mr Gates is talking about, a camera which can detect movement in space as well as see what you're holding?
