"Sometimes, life gets me down and I just need to blow off Steam."
Valve, the company behind Half Life, has just announced that its online games portal, Steam, now has over 13 million active accounts.

Valve's president and co-founder, Gabe Newell, seemed pretty chuffed, regaling us with a few more facts:

"In Steam's case, we have millions of customers who are gamers and dozens of customers who are developers and publishers. In the past year, we've added over 100 new titles from third parties, grown to over 13 million active accounts, and introduced new features such as Guest Passes and Free Weekends. This growth has taught us a lot and inspired many additional features and services that we'll be releasing later this year."

We didn't exactly need more evidence that the internet provides an ever-growing opportunity for gaming. The 8.5 million gamers that World of Warcraft is currently reaching serves that purpose admirably.

Still, Steam's admirable user-base will hopefully make “fair and balanced” Rupert Murdoch blink as he rubs his hands together in anticipation of the money he plans to make with his Sky games portal.
