Thanks to Oxygen Interactive, publisher of the upcoming
Powershot Pinball Constructor, you'll soon be able to play pool in the pub without having to fight grubby locals over whose 50 pence piece is next in line. Oxygen's releasing
8Ball Allstars on the DS this Autumn, and SPOnG has the first screens.
So, how does this newfangled pool-on-a-games-console thing work? Where do you put the 50p? Nowhere! For an as yet unstated one-off payment you can play as much as you like. SPOnG contacted Oxygen to find out how the game's mechanics work, and they told us,
"Almost all controls in 8Ball Allstars can be handled solely through the use of the stylus; menu screens are scrollable but it is not until we get in-game that the control method really comes into its own. Whilst in-game the stylus is used for every element of your shot, players can use the stylus to put top and back spin on the ball through manipulation of the cue tip position, as well as manipulate play angles, direction and aim. Once set on a shot course, the stylus is again used to power a shot, using a pull backward and then forward movement along the line of a visual cue."
The DS seems to be the platform of choice for publishers working in the niche 'pub games' genre. Last week
Sega announced Touch Darts, Oxygen is releasing the aforementioned
Powershot Pinball Constructor and for the more sophisticated pub gamer Nintendo has
42 All-Time Classics.
SPOnG's local, The Dolphin and Marmoset, will never be the same again.
