By Adam HartleySPOnG’s intrepid London bureau chief is currently heading over to the seething consumer hell that is Oxford Street in order to check out the opening of the PlayStation 3 launch queue/camp at Virgin’s flagship ‘MegaShop’.
Yes, with the launch due on Thursday night/Friday morning (midnight, in fact), Virgin is expecting queues to start on Wednesday night. You simply cannot fault good old English optimism.
SCEE has just informed us that:
”PlayStation fans keen to be the first in the UK to receive the console are invited to attend from 12.00 PM noon on Wednesday 21st March to secure their place in the queue. The lower ground floor of the store will be turned into a “campsite” to ensure fans stay comfortable and safe. Entertainment and refreshments will of course be provided plus a whole load of surprise events and happenings!”
A campsite no less! In a Megashop! This is really something. Plus we are assured by the organisers this morning that PS3 campers are actually going to be allowed to stay in the store overnight - which should be slightly strange, to say the least. We hope they have their DSs with them, as their PSP batteries probably won't last that long!
With any joy we might even get to meet Richard Branson himself to shake his hand and congratulate him on opening such a beautiful shrine to 21st Century digital entertainment - and also mildly berate him for being personally responsible for the dissolution of our country’s once marvellous train service.
Stay tuned for pics and reports from the heart of the PS3 launch shenanigans
