PS3 Gold Rush: eBay Bans Sales

Plus, more tales of GameStop woe

PS3 Gold Rush: eBay Bans Sales
Following SPOnG's earlier news on the PS3 eBay gold rush, it seems that the auction site has now banned the many recent attempts to sell pre-ordered PS3s. The company claims that Sony’s next-gen’ hope must be less than 30 days away from a buyer’s hands for it to be legitimately sold via the site.

So, for all those looking to make a quick buck from flogging their pre-ordered machines, October 18th is the earliest date eBay will allow PS3s to go on sale.

Numerous sellers have now had their PS3 auctions removed and their accounts banned due to this violation.

With thousands of eager gamers being denied machines at launch, due to various problems with major retailer’s pre-ordering systems, emotions are running high on the subject.

One tale of woe came from a very disappointed SPOnG reader, who forwarded this (unedited) update to his attempts to obtain a PS3 from GameStop.

“Dear Gamestop,
Months ago I signed up to get information regarding the playstation 3. In addition to checking my email EVERY DAY since July, I also have been going online to various web sites EVERY DAY to find information in hope that I could get a Playstation 3 at launch. Today I was about to sign off the net when I went to check for the news. It was there that I saw that Gamestop was taking preorders for the Playstation 3. At this point in time I rushed to your website and found the numbers for every Gamestop/EB games in my area. After calling 10, the 11th and last one had one spot left. Unfortunately for me, I had to drive in to reserve it. I drove as fast as I could the 20 miles to the EB games, calling multiple times on the way to make sure they still had it. As I ran in the door, I watched the last reservation being sold to another customer. Since late July I've been keeping an eye out for this, and I missed it today because Gamestop/EB games failed to send out their information the day they started taking pre orders. Earlier in the day, I checked my email at around 10 am, but did not go to any websites because I didn't have time. Thanks for the heads up.”

PS3’s will be legitimately available on eBay in seven days time for hilariously inflated prices. SPOnG will bring you more news of cash-in cowboys and disappointed gamers as we get it.

Similar thing happened with the Wii and Fulham Broadway GAME.

They refused to take pre-orders in the week following Nintendo's announcement on the UK launch and would only take phone numbers...
That way they would then call the people who were interested..

Fortunately I caught them the day they started taking orders - I'm quite high on the list now..

But.

A week later - A WEEK LATER - I get a phone call..

"Hi, I understand you were interested in putting down a deposit on a Nintendo Wii?"

Glad I didnt wait.

Oh no way! When did they start taking orders!? Ass-heads! They took my phone number weeks ago too, actually, it was the day after the UK launch date was announced. I was wary of them forgetting about me. I bet they've started taking preorders and din't contact me!

you think thats bad, i was never emailed or anything about the instore preorder. Im still pissed that gamespot and ebgames didnt actually send out a message saying hey were selling them in stores. Instead of being able to go to my mall which opens at 7, doing a mad dash to gamespot and reserving one, i was gleefully going around not knowing they were for presale, then the exact same thing happened to me as the guy who sent in that letter. worst thing was i found out that my gamespot had one of the most obscured showings and had them available the whole time.

Don't worry, you'll still be able to get one eventually!

I don't see why ebay have to ban sales - if people are willing to pay for it, then it sounds fair enough to me. The only reason they "get away" with it is because the demand is so high in the first place - if no one bought it, it would be bad luck for the seller, who'd have wasted £500 - but everyone's only blaming the seller.

I see this as just a natural part of the hype building up to the launch and it's not a surprise at all.

Anyone will be able to get one within a year, I think, and by then they'll hopefully have reduced the price as well! If that isn't good enough, I would blame Sony for not planning a good enough launch - and it's in their best interests to sell as many as possible as soon as possible, so it's a bit pathetic, but they're the ones who lose out in the end.

I agree with you to an extent - I have no real problem with sellers who manage to obtain one to sell ahead - but don't you think those pre-ordering two, three or even four consoles at once and selling the dupes is a little bit disgusting? Especially considering those who have registered real interest weren't contacted, it seems.

I think those looking to sell one should just be able to pre-order the one. If they wanna sell it on, it's their call. But ordering another just so they can get to keep one and be opportunistic is just callous.

Hey, in a perfect world everyone who wants one could buy one, at launch, for the retail price.

Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.

Its a natural function of supply and demand. Some guy puts forth the effort and/or resources to use the system in place to his advantage. Some other guy is lazy, but is willing to pay a premium to get one from the first guy. I would so be all about making some fat bank offa desperate Sony fanboys...blame the people willing to pay the inflated prices, and Sony.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Viva La Free Market!

To be fair - as much as i couldnt care for the PS3 - I've got a good mind to whack a couple on the credit card and see if I can make a nice little turnaround on them...

If you can't beat em..

While i managed to pick up a couple x360's last november for ebaying (in which i made some nice fast christmas cash and was still able to purchase a 360 before christmas without paying out of wallet), I would be cautious about selling the ps3's. I have a feeling that these bad boys are going to have a high fail rate and wouldnt it suck to have to do the warrenty for somebodyt that bought a DOA ps3 from you.
