Xbox 360 Controller S?

Shock controller revision comment from MS

Posted by Staff
The Xbox 360 Ultimate Cheeseburger pad had to go. Now fetching a decent price on eBay (as would, we assume a two-headed baby in a jar) the Duke was an error, rendering early Xbox adoptions playable only to the freakishly large.

This situation was remedied in time for Japanese launch, by the release of the Controller S, a surprisingly good control pad many at the time claimed rivalled or even bettered the new standard in gaming, Sony's DualShock, a design the PlayStation company could not abandon in spite its best efforts.

Indeed, even when Sony attempted to throw away the DualShock it soon returned. Like a boomerang! But not.

Today, Microsoft's Xbox 360 pad is widely hailed as the best controller for a games console ever. Although lacking the now hardwired familiarity of the PlayStation controller, its almost perfect ergonomically-sensitive construction does make it a joy to use.

Which is why recent comments from Microsoft's product unit manager for hardware Robert S. Walker come as something of a surprise. Speaking to ShackNews yesterday, Walker went on record to say: "...Microsoft is looking at ways to modify the right analog stick on the controller to make it more conducive to the precise movements used in shooters and various other genres. This controller would not replace the original controller, and would merely be an option available to players looking for a more advanced control scheme."

Nothing official has been recorded from Microsoft and the company has seemed to distance itself from Walker's comments in recent hours. Either way, the more controller options we get, the better.

See I could understand if they fixed the damn d-pad as well, but that should have been sorted on the first Xbox and certainly by the 360. I'm not sure they should have announced anything yet, especially if there isn't likely to be a product out soon. But hey, if they manage to sort the right stick out with more sensitivity I'm down with that.

Its a trackball!!

Other games that need more sensitivity...? like games normally controlled by a mouse?

Although, I wouldn't mind playing something like Medieval 2: Total War on my big screen with 6.1 sound :)

The Xbox 360 Ultimate Cheeseburger pad had to go.

Do you not mean the Xbox Ultimate Cheeseburger pad?

And as far as "best controller ever" is concerned, look no further than this - obviously the inspiration behind the 360 pad.

Isn't that just a rip off of the original xbox pad??

I think they shoud be sorting a pad for SF2 on Live etc.

Nice idea but the 360 pad is fine how it is for other kinds of game.

You might laugh, but there was a company that was producing controllers with a track ball in place of a right analog stick...

It's called the reflex control.

as much as it seems liek a passing gimick this thing is actually totaly awsoem to use. The sense of texture in 3d space is very cool and its suppose dot have different attachment in the final version (gun handle etc..).

If they get it out for the sub100 proce point they are shootign for and can make it actualy control a proper game well it might actually be pretty sweet.

I also remember back in the early to mid 90's someone put out a control pad for the pc that basically just had a big black rubber ball about th esize of a tenis ball stuck on a stick. right hand would grip the pad and buttons and the left just hold said ball. It would sense analog up,down, left, right, front, back and twist in any direction. Felt a bit akward but worked great for decent when i tried it at EB.

trying to find onlein but no luck, no idea what the company or product where called :/

I remember mid 90's, some crappy company made a gun controller for the PC.

http://www.act-labs.com/scripts/proddetails.asp?Pid=92

This wasn't it, but the info has a bullet for "The gun for MAD DOG McCREE!". I think that'd be something you'd want to HIDE from consumers.

Anyways, it was essentially a game pad plastered onto a gun shaped piece of plastic. The trigger would shoot which was about the only gun like thing about it. There was no up or down detection. No pushing foward to run, no backpeddling, unless you set it to one of the gun buttons. I think it MAY have had side to side tracking, but I'm not sure and not sure if it was strafing or turning or if you could even customize it.

No picture, but I assure you it sucked.
