Sports Interactive: The SPOnG interview

Jacobson spills on Football Manager 2007, Sega and cracking the US.

You probably know that UK's Sports Interactive is responsible for all the finest football management sims ever made - that is, the early Championship Manager games developed for Eidos (when they were still good, in other words) and now the Football Manager series for Sega.

You may also remember that Sports Interactive was recently purchased by Sega as we reported on back in early April), and SPOnG was lucky enough to catch up with MD Miles Jacobson out at E3 last month to chew the fat a little and find out what it's actually like to be part of the Sega 'family'.

Miles was more than effusive about the benefits of the deal, particularly in regards to the creative advantages it gives the company - being able to share their technology and know-how with other studios in the group.

Miles commented: "We've got some great AI technology and font technology that people can use. Obviously, other people are more graphically advanced than we are, so we're going to look at making the game a bit prettier, so people can't say it's a bloody spreadsheet any more. But it's not just the technology. If you've got hundreds of people who work on multiple platforms, if we get stuck doing something, we can send an email round to all the dev-studios."

Football Manager 2007 is going to be out at the end of October/early November, on PC, Mac, and Intel Mac, Xbox 360 and PSP in November, with "...more new features in this game than in any of our previous releases" according to Miles.

SPOnG should be getting a glimpse at the first beta code later this month, so we'll be bringing you the latest news on that when we see it.
