Summary
Nintendo 3DS owners now get the chance to play one of gaming's longest-running franchises as Resident Evil appears in Mercenaries form.
The game itself features re-mastered stages from both Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. These have been updated to make the most of the 3DS’s new visual experiences in both single and two-player online modes.
Classic characters including Chris Redfield, Krauser, Hunk, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton and Rebecca Chambers make their appearances in the 3D version and joining them is the new character, Claire Redfield.
Although the over-the-shoulder targeting system familiar both from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 is retained, the 3DS owner also has the option to use a first-person view for aiming. Also included is the useful ability to move around while firing and reloading. The upper screen of the 3DS is used to indicate game-play in the rich 3D rendered environments. The lower screen and its touch-screen capability is used for inventory management.
Character customisation is in place with characters levelling up with new costumes, abilities and weapons as the game progresses.
As a bonus the game also comes with a demo of the forthcoming Resident Evil Revelations.
