Summary

After the groundbreaking accomplishment of Doom from Id Software, the first-person genre grew in leaps and bounds. Id are arguably still the most experienced and talented software house in the industry as far as the Doom clone is concerned, and the production of the Quake series has boosted their popularity further still. Following the most successful in the series, Quake 3, the Team Arena expansion pack is a highly desirable piece of software for many fans of the genre.

While all of the original features are still available, a whole plethora of brand new features can be incorporated into the main game to further increase the variety within Quake 3. Ammunition bonuses in particular have been boosted considerably. Players can now take advantage of an increased number of both offensive and defensive weapons, including nail guns and invulnerability spheres.

The number of game types has also been boosted with the addition of a harvester mode. Here you will participate in a hunting and hiding sabotage mission that takes place on enemy grounds. A second variation of “capture the flag” (CTF) is also a welcome addition. These types of missions help the players to learn and adapt to new strategies within Quake 3, and indeed the rest of the first-person genre. Characters in the game move more swiftly than ever before, and the vocal impressions they give can be frightening, if not intimidating.

In many players' eyes, Quake 3 is the best multi-player game available for PC, and the Team Arena expansion pack will reinforce their collective opinion.
