Summary

Despite a plethora of renowned Nintendo franchises such as Pokemon and Zelda, the Japanese software house is undeniably most famed for its moustachioed plumber from Brooklyn who goes by the name of Mario. He first appeared on arcade classic Donkey Kong as Jumpman, but his most loved and consequently most famous venture of the 1980s was Super Mario Brothers. And the game is as good now as it was all those years ago, as the NES Classics release proves.

A pedigree platformer divided into eight worlds and 36 levels, Super Mario Brothers marks the first occasion that saw the Italian plumber bump heads with arch-nemesis Bowser. The first three levels of each world boasted classic platform elements, and introduced us to a vast array of now familiar Nintendo foes such as Goombas, Koopas and Bullet Bills. The final stage within each world pits players in a gloomy dungeon against a fire-breathing, hammer-throwing Bowser.

Your ultimate goal is of course to rescue Princess Peach. But after sending each version of Bowser to the fiery depths of his lair, you'll be met with that oh so infamous line "...but the Princess is in another castle". Of course, when the eighth and final castle was complete, Mario finally got his reward, not to mention a peck on the cheek from the Nintendo beauty.

And that's it - 36 levels of traditional, unadulterated, no-frills platforming. It was special back then, and it's just as memorable today. One for the history books.
