Summary

The worms are back in Dreamcast town in Team 17’s latest offering, Worms World Party. The original party game has been improved and tweaked to offer you even more of the laughs and explosions that you know you love. In case you’ve been on a different planet for the last six years, Worms is a cartoon styled, turn-based, strategy game featuring cute little er, worms with large weapons. Worms World Party has many new features, but the main addition is full on-line functionality. You can now play against other gamers from all over the world whenever you want. Do you think you are the best Wormer in the world? Let’s see what you’ve got.

Because Worms is turn-based, it makes it ideal for Internet play. If you have played other on-line games like Chu Chu Rocket you have probably experienced lag, the delay before your actions are registered in the game. This is not a problem with Worms and the Internet play is extremely smooth. While you are waiting for your turn, you can ‘chat’ to the other players in the game using a keyboard. You actually end up making friends in different countries, how social is that?

Up to four teams can compete simultaneously and each team can have up to six worms each. Before we go any further, it has to be mentioned that Worms is one of the most customisable games around. You can tailor almost everything in the game from weapon selection, power-ups, damage, backgrounds, and millions of other rules and possible variations. The backgrounds can also be randomly generated if you wish, so the level possibilities are nigh on infinite. The aim of the game remains the same: the team left standing wins.

You usually have a time limit in which to pick a weapon, a target, decide your aiming angle and the power of your shot, taking into account wind direction if applicable to your weapon choice. There are also utilities that can be used to navigate the level or dig into the landscape or protect your worms. The strategies involved can be diverse and extremely complex. Still, Worms remains easy to get into and difficult to truly master.

The Emphasis of Worms World Party is on fun and comedy. In addition to the new single-player missions, there are new weapons and new multi-player co-operative and deatchmatch modes. If you like addictive games heavily laden with gameplay, Worms World Party is right up your street.
