Summary

There was a time when it would have been fair to ask, does the World really need another beat 'em up? In the time of Tekken 2, Toshinden, Virtua Fighter and Street Fighter Zero, things were getting a bit samey.

PC's had the power to move things on a step or two, but the PC gaming audience is not a beat 'em up loving audience. So we had to wait for the power of the Dreamcast to bring the latest and greatest out of the arcades and into our homes.

Soul Calibur is the first beat em up to really do the DC justice. Virtua Fighter 3TB is good, but Soul Calibur is great. There are few surprises, and it really reminds one of Toshinden on the Playstation. But if you can remember the joy you felt at playing a beat 'em up that beautiful looking and playable back in 1995, then imagine that feeling brought bang up to date.

The characters in Soul Calibur are varied, as are their moves. The backgrounds are awesome, and the whole thing is breathtakingly fast and smooth.
