PS2 E3 Round Up

Our pick of the forthcoming Sony titles.

Like it or not, the PlayStation 2 is the winner this generation. With the biggest installed userbase, and the most comprehensive developer support, it's just obligatory to have one if you don't want to miss out on the best games. Not sure what you're supposed to be looking forward to? Allow us...

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, is a new version of the recently released third installment of Konami's blockbuster franchise. The game is simply Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater with online play, so you won't have to wait till MGS4 on the PS3 to experience this. Oh, and the game has a new controllable camera system too, for those who didn't appreciate the claustrophobic angle of the original.

Everyone's favourite 3D swordfighter is back: Soulcalibur III. The game builds on the huge success of the last cross-platform release, with 20 returning characters and three new ones. It'll be exciting to see what developments the Tales of Souls will take, but also interesting is the news that the game will include a Creation mode where players can design their own characters.

Game of the show for many has been Okami by Capcom. The game has been developed by the new Clover studio, headed up by the man behind Viewtiful Joe, Atsushi Inaba. The game is rendered in a delightful style inspired by traditional Japanese painting. You play a divinity who, bit by bit, must restore colour and life to an empty world.

Total War developers Creative Assembly have recently been bought by SEGA, which it has to be said is one of the better corporate take-overs you could hope for. Instrumental in sealing the deal was the ongoing development of Spartan: Total Warrior. The Assembly are always looking for new ways to use their superb 3D battle engine, most famously for a television programme recreating battles in the days of ancient Rome. In this case they've used it to make a hack and slash title where you play one man in a battle between two enormous armies.

We love Katamari Damacy, so we're delighted that there's going to be a sequel in the form of We Love Katamari. Please your ruthless Cosmos-ruling father once again by bringing him whole planets rolled up into a ball. The game will also feature a promising two player co-operative mode. There's no confirmed European release date yet though. Please, Namco, please!

Resident Evil 4 was the jewel in the Gamecube crown for grateful owners when Capcom made it a Nintendo exclusive. Now the game, the first free-roaming one in the series, is also returning to more familiar PlayStation territory. We're bound to say, though, that it doesn't look quite as smooth as the one on the 'Cube, with a few jagged edges here and there.

Ratchet returns without Clank in Ratchet: Deadlocked. There'll be more fun turning your foes into a variety of farmyard animals in the single player game, which also features a co-operative mode. An online multiplayer mode has been added too, which takes the form of a team-based third-person shooter. Players must capture strategic points and hold them, like in Battlefield 1942.

Shaping up nicely is Wanda and Colossus, or Shadow of the Colossus as it's now being called. The game is developed by the team behind the beautiful and haunting ICO, one of our favourite games to ever grace the PS2. What's been shown at E3 has just confirmed what we already knew - you must defeat enormous monsters with a combination of agile action and puzzle-solving, and you get a horse too. That hasn't prevented our excitement level jumping up another notch, though.

It's been revealed that Final Fantasy XI, announced for the Xbox 360, will not feature upgraded or optimised graphics, and will use the same code, models and libraries as the originals on PC and PS2. In fact, it was slated for release on the Xbox, but Square Enix and Microsoft could not come to an agreement over Square's preferences for the online model. Microsoft are to release their policy for the 360 so it will come out on that. In the meantime, Final Fantasy XII, directed by Yasumi Matsuno will be coming out on PS2, and after Squenix's recent experiments with online and multiplayer gaming will return to the single player RPG format that made the series famous. Expect an ambitious storyline and loads of luscious cinematic graphics.

And this is all barely scratching the surface. Also coming is a second Kingdom Hearts game, the strange-but-true collaboration between Square Enix and Disney, the return of new, EA hype-injected Burnout in Burnout Revenge, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 3, Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, and a new Onimusha, subtitled Dawn of Dreams. Buckets and buckets of games, more than you need. If you disagree with our list, or if you think we've left out anything, well, you know what the forum is for.
