News has emerged that Sony Computer Entertainment has finalised a deal with AOL to bring standardised connectivity to the console across America.
The deal was made by Sony’s consumer electronics division and entails the provision of broadband services for various electronic goods manufactured by the company, on an always-on basis.
As well as the PlayStation 2, the deal includes provision for TV sets and stereo equipment, as well as gateway technologies to deal with copyright management issues.
"Consumers want the Internet to play a greater role in their lives,” said Steve Case, Chairman of AOL Time Warner, “and are looking forward to the day when broadband can deliver all of a family's home entertainment, information and communications needs over a wide variety of devices."
This news is no doubt a move by Sony to consolidate its positioning towards making the PlayStation 2 the central control point for electronic devices for the home. The fact that Sony has chosen to break this news to the market, days before the US launch of the Xbox, is unlikely to be a coincidence.
