Sony Computer Entertainment of America has announced that it will be releasing the PlayStation 2 Linux kit in the States, to the delight of the nation’s geek community.

The open source Linux kit will enable hobby coders to squeeze out threads of PlayStation 2 code in the privacy of their bedrooms and will effectively mean that anyone with the inclination can turn their console to a whole host of new and exciting applications.

This news follows the kit being made available in Japan where it sold out in a matter of hours.

SCE put together an online forum for interested programmers to register their desire for the kit to be released in America, promising to bring it to market if enough support could be established. That happened and units are being readied.

The good news for you lot is that SCE has created a similar forum for European PlayStation 2 users and will be assessing the level of support soon.
