Peripheral manufacturer Mad Catz has released an interesting bit of information regarding its latest controller for the PlayStation 2, known as the Bioforce.
This little gizmo will electrocute the player at given points in the game, such as when a car crashes or a fighting character is hit, for instance. The idea is to temporarily paralyse the player’s hands by dealing out a mild electric shock. Sounds, erm, great!
“It caught a lot of people's imaginations,” said Mad Catz's president, Darren Richardson. “Biostimulation of muscles has been around for years," Richardson said. "It causes the muscles to contract and gives you a sensation that makes it difficult to move your hand. It really works well with fighting games."
Well, what do you think? We see this new electrocution device as being something of a double-edged sword. If, for instance, you are indulging in a bit of solo fun, alone in your bedroom, being continuously zapped by your games console could prove somewhat annoying. If however, you are playing against your friends in some sort of multiplayer activity, all of whom are similarly wired up, it should prove to be fun.
As well as gleaning the pleasure of trouncing your competitor in a virtual race or fight, you get to enjoy the added bonus of causing him or her to have spasms of the lower arm. Very cool indeed.
Mad Catz has stressed that it will be carrying out extensive medical testing before the product hits the market later in the year.
