It's smaller than that, honest.

With all the retail backlash surrounding the PSP Go, it's interesting to hear that the new model has had a positive impact on sales according to Sony in the States.

In the US, SCEA has told Gamasutra that sales of the PSP platform have gone up 300 per cent since the launch of the Go.

PlayStation Store game downloads also shot up 200 per cent in the same period. Whether the increase is due to genuine excitement about the PSP Go or revitalised interest in the standard 3,000 series remains to be seen, but it's not like Sony is going to complain about the results.

"The launch of PSPgo has generated strong consumer interest in the overall PSP platform and the PlayStation Network's digital content offering" said SCEA's corporate communications director Patrick Seybold.

"With several blockbuster games launching digitally and on UMD in the coming weeks - from LittleBigPlanet to Assassin's Creed Bloodlines - we expect this momentum to continue and look forward to a strong holiday season for both the PSPgo and PSP-3000."

It's been hard to gauge the success of the PSP Go, with SCEEUK apparently revealing a 120 per cent hardware sales increase on the one hand; indie retailers backlashing against the concept of a digital distributed model on another; and chain stores slashing prices of the handheld in its first weekend, on some freakish third hand that we've acquired somewhere.

Still, you know what they say. Any publicity...
