Look, we're not cynical and we love our families. We would not suggest for one moment that anybody should hover around the dying body of a popular yet ageing aunt hoping that some of her magic would rub off on us - or that we'd inherit a huge chunk of her wealth.
Nor would we suggest that ancient and beloved aunt be painted "Cinnabar Red" and sent out into the street in Japan on Thursday, July 3, 2008 priced at 16,000 yen (£77.50). But that's what Sony in Japan is doing with its latest PS2 incarnation - the "Cinnabar Red" SCPH-90000 CR.
Yes, in order to feed the insatiable hunger that Japanese gamers have for hardware - and to ensure that the PlayStation brand remains affordable and prominent - the dear old PS2 is being tarted and pimped out. Sorry, we got a little carried away with that analogy.
Anyway, according to SCEJ, it "will continue to expand the PlayStation 2 platform and create a new world of computer entertainment with this new colour offering and the wide variety of PlayStation 2 software." We're not at all sure how a new 'colour offering' equates to 'a new world of computer entertainment' - but then again, we're not a major global producer of successful video game consoles.
As if that wasn't enough to keep the PlayStation brand in the minds and homes of Japanese gamers who haven't yet forked out for the PS3, well there are more colour delights coming in the form of the 'Metallic Blue' PSP. This comes in two packs: 'Metallic Blue Value Pack' and 'PSP Metallic Blue 1 Seg Pack'.
These hit the island on Thursday July 17th, 2008 as - of course - "a limited offer at recommended retail prices of 23,800 yen (£115.50) and 29,800 yen (£144.60) respectively."
The Seg comes with the “
1-Seg tuner, a pouch in the same blue color that can store the PSP system with the tuner attached, a stand to place the PSP system for TV viewing, strap, cloth, and a 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo".
You will never guess what this means? "With these new offerings, together with the lineup of forthcoming new game titles, SCEJ will continue to expand the market and create a new world of handheld computer entertainment with PSP."
Yes, another new world (this time of handheld computer entertainment) brought to you by the magic of colour!
