Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) is attempting to shock the UMD format back into life by partnering with MTV to release the channels content for PSP.
American PSP owners can now sink their teeth into the likes of Jackass, Beavis & Butt-head, and Aeon Flux at $14.99 (£7.50) respectively.
This marks the first time that SCEA has entered into such a deal and put out TV content on UMD itself. It smells suspiciously like the company is trying to revive a format that has seen poor sales and flagging support.
Sony, unsurprisingly, was upbeat about the move. "This collaboration with MTV is a key first step in meeting the needs of our consumers, who are utilizing PSP as a video player more than ever and are thirsting for more content, particularly short-form videos", uttered Phil Rosenberg, senior VP of sales and business development for SCEA.
"MTV’s programming is hugely popular, and SCEA can utilize our internal resources to appropriately manage the publishing and distribution of these hit shows on UMD. This demonstrates our commitment to supporting the UMD video format by delivering what consumers want to watch at the right price.
"SCEA will continue to license movie, TV, and other video content, leveraging our sales and marketing strengths, as a strategic focus moving forward", he waffled. (Although he did achieve two points in management speak for the use of 'leveraging' and 'moving forward'.)
