Summary

When is a prequel not a prequel? When it's a sequel. Or... a presequel? Alas, no-one from the marketing departments of either gaming or Hollywood has given us an adequate term to describe Mass Effect: Andromeda's status in the grand scheme of the Mass Effect universe, so we'll just have to call it a spin-off.

You see, the game kicks off somewhere between Mass Effect 2 and 3, when a certain pathfinder is warning of dire threats to the Milky Way. A contingent of humans and aliens, uncertain of the galaxy's future, sets off into deep space on a journey towards the Andromeda galaxy, ensuring that life from our corner of the universe will persist. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned. You wake up after 600 years of hypersleep and find that not only do you have to go about settling a new corner of the universe, you also have to fend off a grave threat to your new home...

Mass Effect fans can, of course, expect the same epic sweep that they've come to expect from developer BioWare, along with some new flourishes to boot.

Third-person shooting has always been one of Mass Effect's strengths, but with Andromeda it's beefed up a little further thanks to the addition of a jetpack and a new dodge mechanic to keep things fresh.

There's also greater scope for exploration, with a fun new land vehicle that you can roam around planets' surfaces in.

The series' RPG elements have also been amped up, with more skill trees and the option to unlock multiple character class profiles offering unique buffs and abilities for different play styles.
