Rome: Total War plays host to four distinguished factions, three of which are playable, and all of which are allies in the beginning. However, each of these factions has a penchant for domination it isn't long before these allies come into conflict, spurring a civil war of epic proportions. As leader of one of these factions, your goal is to consume enemy towns in order to ultimately be declared Imperator of the land.

Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion's story takes place after the last Emperor of a unified Rome has died. His successors in Rome and Constantinople are now uneasy allies and rivals for power. The 'barbarians' are massing along the borders, and in some cases are living inside what used to be Roman territory. 200 years have passed since the main campaign in Rome: Total War. Players can control vast armies and over 100 new units as they battle across an updated European map that reflects the historical changes since Rome: Total War. You can choose to tear Rome apart by leading hordes of barbarians, or stand and defend the Empire as a leader of one of the two former Romes, the Western and Eastern Empires.

The new historical battles in Rome: Total War Alexander unlock sequentially, telling a story and accurately reflecting the conditions that Alexander endured and the tactics he employed. The new campaign in Alexander will give players the objective of matching the achievements of one of the greatest generals in Western civilisation. It adds four new factions to the original game, including the Macedonians and Persians.
