The concept behind Wheelman all looks strangely familiar. Indeed it looks like a complete steal from Driver, a series of games from Atari that started well, but which descended by version 3 in to a farce of poor design and spurious review scores paid for by exclusives and advertising deals.

Wheelman aims to avoid those mistakes and bring the kind of high octane, mission-based driving action to the PS3 that Driver spectacularly failed to deliver on the PS2. The eponymous Wheelman of the game is Milo Burik, who is played (digitally speaking) by action star Vin Diesel. Although Vin is the driver at the heart of Wheelman, news of an associated MTV-produced motion picture has gone quiet recently.

The action takes place in Barcelona where you get to control the gravel-voiced baldy. As an undercover agent, you must pose as a driver for hire to infiltrate the Spanish underworld. As a result, Burik needs to gain credibility as a wheelman which he does by undertaking a selection of 31 main missions that drive the story forwards. There are also 105 side-missions which, while not vital to completing the game, add hours to the gameplay. While the majority of the missions are driving-based, some see Burik take to his feet and participate in third-person, shooting-style gameplay. When he is driving, he has his pick of a large number of vehicles, from sports cars and motorcycles up to HGV lorries. Selecting the right vehicle for the mission will be vital to completing it in the most effective manner.

Wheelman promises to deliver driving action unlike any ever seen before. Set in a crowded city environment, much of which is destructible. Wheelman will be able to pull off unique stunts, including 360 degree vehicle spins. << less
