Summary

The modern day point-and-click adventure genre is undeniably in full swing for 2004. Ubisoft games Myst and Uru arguably pioneered the popularity of such adventures, but recent times show there is plenty of stiff competition eager to take the crown from the French publisher's epics. And next in the long line-up of PC adventures is the Centauri-developed Gooka: The mystery of Janatris from Cenega.

Gooka, a respected judge, returns home from a long journey, but as the ship enters the harbour, he doesn't have a clue of what awaits him at home. Instead of being welcomed by his lady, the beautiful Lidra, and by joyful shouts of his son Yorimar, he's welcomed only by burnt ruins. He learns that Lidra was badly injured in the fire and that Yorimar was kidnapped and nobody knows who did it or where they took him.

So there's your motive - an average missing-persons plot, but one that'll grip you within a couple of hours play time. The adventure as a whole successfully combines elements from several respected genres, and has players embracing point-and-click gameplay, puzzle-solving and character development reminiscent of any standard RPG. Players will also interact with several dozen non-playable characters (NPCs) amidst an array of turn-based battles and problem-solving challenges.

As most games like this one are, Gooka boasts a beautiful set of convincing fantasy backdrops that play host to some welcome graphical effects such as weather and lighting.

It's not Final Fantasy and it's not Myst, but Gooka is a compelling game to play, and that's what matters the most.
