Summary

The racing genre, despite all its 16-bit efforts, never really became convincing until the industry turned the way of 3D gaming. Now it’s believable, and in the wake of literally thousands of racing games comes THQ’s ATV Off Road Fury 2 - a free-racing extravaganza.

Looking at the game’s visuals, it’s evident that developer Rainbow has put considerable effort into making the second instalment of Off Road Fury look as realistic as possible, whilst at the same time giving it a solid arcade feel. It looks convincing, but also possesses the vibrant colours and flashy camera movements typical of an arcade game.

Getting into the game itself, ATV2 doesn’t force players to follow a number of pre-set circuits a la most standard racing games. It encourages players to choose their own path, offering some 40 off-road, free-roaming environments. Naturally, the aim is to get from A to B as quickly as possible, but you must determine how you do it. The spacious locales come with varied terrain, with rivers and mountains placed as obstacles between you and your goal.

Players can choose from a respectable 24 authentic ATV's and their respective riders across seven extensive game modes. Options include the obligatory time trial exercises and arcade races and there’s also a multi-player option for up to four players.

There’s plenty to see and do in ATV Off Road Fury 2. Enjoy it.
