Summary

Previously only available as a downloadable online game, Laser Squad Nemesis gets boxed up and released officially by Just Play. This sci-fi strategy title, from the world respected Gollop brothers (they of the million selling and critically acclaimed X-Com series) builds on their heritage and seemingly uncanny ability to create games with the 'just one more go' factor. Laser Squad Nemesis is one of the most classy and dangerously addictive titles released in 2003. Don't let the fact that it's email-based put you off either. In fact, it's a distinct blessing, and shows how the Gollops have taken their past game experience and seamlessly melded it with this underused vehicle for Internet-based strategy.

You take control of one of three fundamentally different races, be they the multi-talented human Marines, the cold, calculated and brutal Machina, or the rapacious and insidious alien race known as the Spawn. Each of these factions has a variety of units each with unique abilities allowing for some complex strategies to be employed as you battle within one of the many well constructed and diverse environments. As we said earlier, it's an email game where you have the opportunity to play someone else on the other side of the world (or indeed you can play your significant other, parents, best mate, worst mate in a 'Hostseat' mode - two people and one computer). The mechanics are thus: you send your turn, they send theirs, the LSN server sorts out the results of both your moves and you get the results (viewing the subsequent results real-time). This process continues until one person is eaten, blown to bits or vaporised in highly entertaining and rather spectacular way in a cross between Star Wars and Aliens. The 'blessing' mentioned earlier is this is a system that allows you play the game at your own pace. If you want to speed things up a bit you can set certain conditions to a match such as the minimum length of time to respond to a turn.

Laser Squad Nemesis is a highly addictive and contagious title. As its grip takes hold, your carefully constructed gaming sessions are thrown unceremoniously out of the window and you find the early morning chirrups of the local bird life cheerfully announce that you have no life left.
