Summary

He’s on fire! The immortal words of Midway’s NBA Jam. The arcade classic is being re-released on the GameBoy Advance and early indications suggest that this portable conversion captures the fun and excitement of the original.

NBA Jam shies away from the typical simulation style approach of most basketball game and places more emphasis on playability. Rules? They went out the window a long time ago. What fun is basketball if you can’t elbow your way to the ball and to victory?

NBA Jam is a two-on-two dunkfest where up to four players can play simultaneously. Four consoles and the essential link-up cable are required, of course. But you have the opportunity to play the game this way we recommend it.

A turbo gauge can be used to give your characters a speed boost, useful for avoiding opponents and pulling off the most spectacular dunks in the game. What’s the point of winning if you can’t do it in style?

If any player scores three baskets in a row, they’re ‘on fire’. This means that they have infinite turbo, have a higher shot percentage, and most importantly represent a dangerous threat. The only way to stop them is to score a basket.

Not content with the majority of professional teams and players available on the roster, Midway has gone a step further and included a variety of unlikely basketball stars. Several characters from other games are hidden within the code.

NBA Jam is an excellent, over-the-top basketball game, and now its portable.
