Summary
The term 'adventure racing' rarely crops up in the world of video games, which is why this latest game from Midway requires more of an introduction than normal. Think Diddy Kong Racing or Mario Kart, fleshed out with an array of intertwining character stories, with a heavy focus on combat, but in airplanes.

Think Diddy Kong Racing or Mario Kart, fleshed out with an array of intertwining character stories, with a heavy focus on combat, but in airplanes.
The gameplay itself in Freaky Flyers sees players choose from a selection of 14 different quirky characters, get behind the controls of their respective aircraft and take to the skies, partaking in a host of exploration, adventuring, stunt flying and dog-fighting. In each case, a complex, branching adventure takes the player through each character's storyline, be it the American hero, Johnny Turbine, German Traci Torpedoes, or the spicy bandita Cactus Rose. An assortment of varied locations play host to the action and, as such, players find themselves visiting such locales as Exotic Island, Roaring Chicago and Haunted Transylvania.
As well as the main single player experience, Freaky Flyers also places quite an emphasis on the multiplayer side of things. Subsequently, you and up to three of your mates can battle it out across an assortment of the game's environments with a range racing, dog-fights and stunt flying.
A very cartoon-esque style portrays the action throughout the game, with wild stories presented in fantastical and artistic settings, and Warner Bros-style over-the-top sound effects exaggerating the proceedings along the way. The emphasis here definitely seems to be on fun, and that's exactly what Freaky Flyers is, so don't take it too seriously and you might just enjoy it.
