Summary

Gilbert Goodmate is a 'Point-n-click' adventure game from Prelusion. Set in an easy-to-use and beautifully-coloured 2D environment, unlike most Point-n-click games today, which feature 3D interfaces. The 2D interface is much easier to master making Gilbert Goodmate easier to get to grips with.

It’s good to see that game developers have listened to their critics and are prepared to give the tried and tested 2D environment another shot.

Although Gilbert Goodmate features an easy-to-use interface the gameplay is not especially impressive. The plot is a trifle slow-moving and unintuitive, And there is no real sense of adventure to it, which, let's face it, is what adventure games are all about!.

You play a young man who has to save his grandfather, who has been blamed for allowing a magical mushroom be stolen by an evil wizard. Gilbert Goodmate must find the stolen magic mushroom, and capture the thief before the end of the week, otherwise his grandfather is no more.

Gilbert Goodmate has tried to adopt the style of Lucasarts "Monkey Island 3' but has not been as succesful. The humour is not as good as the LucasArts game. Gilbert goodmate is not all bad though; it does have a wide variety of locations and more than 50 characters to interact with. Plus some taxing puzzles to put your mind to, which will have you up untiol the wee small hours wondering how to complete them. The game has much to offer; ultimately though you get a sense that there is something missing from the game. The atmosphere and story are not compelling to captivate casual adventurers, though keen fans of the genre may find something here to occupy them.
