Summary

Often regarded as PC specific, the real-time strategy gamebelongs to a love/hate genre. While, for some people, the click-click-watch gameplay seems to be as useful as buying a dog and leaving it in the house all day, others prefer the slow-moving progression method of gameplay. The Settles series has proved to be quite popular with a specific audience, and its success is reflected in the development of Settlers 3 Gold Edition.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to play Settlers 3, the Gold Edition does not appear to offer anything new. But for experienced players the addition of new maps, multi-player features, new buildings and an improved map editor warrants the purchase of this expansion pack. Gameplay remains almost identical, with minor tweaks that perfect the series at its current stage. Once again you are able to choose from a variety of game modes that include scenarios, campaigns and multi-player challenges. Two to fourteen players can participate in on-line head-to-head campaigns. This feature is likely to prove the most popular to the Gold Edition, especially for those looking for a touch more action.

The Gold Edition now comprises of 27 single-player maps, with further maps included for the multi-player option. Also, there are now 140 types of buildings that expand on the existing castles and temples of the original. The map editor allows for complete freedom within the Settlers world, whereby you can edit existing locations or create entirely new environments, choosing your preferred difficulty settings along the way. Until Settlers IV makes an appearance, the Gold Edition should satisfy strategy fanatics’ appetites.
